The Quote I Loved…But Didn’t Know How to Live.

Eighteen years ago, while we were building our home, I placed a quote on the wall in my laundry room.

It read:

Peace.
It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.
It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

I remember how deeply it resonated with me. And at the same time…I had absolutely no idea how to live it.  It felt beautiful. Inspiring. Almost like a fairy tale. Because my reality at the time looked nothing like that.

We’re surrounded by wisdom like this—quotes, advice, guidance in books, on social media, in conversations. Words that land somewhere inside of us. But for many of us, they don’t actually change anything.

We read them.
We feel something.
And then we carry on with our day.

Not because we don’t want that life…but because we don’t know how to get from here to there.

Looking back now, I can see why. It wasn’t that the answers weren’t available to me.
It’s that I didn’t yet have the awareness to understand how to apply them. I was living from my past conditioning—my patterns, my reactions, my beliefs about what life was and how I had to move through it.

So when I heard things like:
“Be present.”
“Find stillness.”
“Stop and smell the roses”

It all felt… distant. Like it was meant for someone else. Not because I thought I was above it—
but because I genuinely couldn’t see how it fit into my life. I was raising a family. Working. Managing responsibilities, expectations, and constant demands. I was overwhelmed. Stressed. Reactive. And if I’m being honest…I didn’t slow down long enough to truly sit with those teachings.

I heard them—but I didn’t integrate them.

I remember what “chaos” felt like back then.  Something so normal as my kids arguing (like siblings do), voices rising, someone crying, someone calling for me—that noise would instantly create noise within me. I would feel it in my body. My patience would disappear. My voice would rise.

The chaos outside of me became chaos inside of me. Every time.

But, of course, it wasn’t just those moments. It showed up in the pressure I carried…
the constant mental lists, the expectations, the feeling of needing to hold everything together.

It was in the conversations that lingered in my mind, the stress of day-to-day responsibilities,
and the quiet overwhelm that never really seemed to turn off. Even when things looked “fine” on the outside, there was often noise within me.

And yet… that quote stayed on my wall. Quietly reminding me of something I didn’t yet know how to reach. Today, I can honestly say, that kind of peace is no longer a concept to me.
It’s something I live. Not perfectly—but consistently. Through the inner work I’ve done, I’ve learned how to experience life differently. The external world hasn’t stopped being noisy. Life hasn’t removed challenges. But I am no longer at the mercy of it.

There is space where there used to be a reaction.
There is calm where there used to be overwhelm.

Now, even in the middle of noise, trouble or hard work…I can remain steady in my heart.

And this is the part I didn’t understand back then. It’s not about trying harder. It’s not about forcing calm. It’s not about pretending everything is okay. It’s about learning how to shift your internal experience of life. It’s about awareness. Understanding your patterns. Gently interrupting the way you’ve always reacted. And creating a new relationship with what’s happening around you.

That quote wasn’t a fairy tale. It was an invitation. One that I just wasn’t ready to accept yet—because I didn’t have the tools, the awareness, or the understanding.

But once I did…Everything changed.

If you’ve ever read something that resonated deeply, but felt out of reach…you’re not alone. It’s not that it’s not meant for you. It’s simply that no one has shown you how to make it real in your life.

If you’re beginning to see yourself in this, this is the foundation of the work I call akaYou—coming back to yourself in a way that actually transforms how you experience life.

If you feel called to explore this more, you can find additional reflections, guidance, and details about my akaYou method and masterclass on my website.
